The design of this church mimics rays of light coming from the cross, a symbolism of the powerful radiance of the faith and the blessings we receive from God. The rays of light radiate from a cylindrical structural representing the Pope’s mitre. The shrine is dedicated to San Pedro Calungsod, a Filipino migrant, sacristan and missionary catechist who suffered persecution and eventual martyrdom in Guam while giving witness to the Christian faith. He was formally beatified by Pope John Paul II on March 5, 2000 and officially canonized by Pope Benedict XVI at St. Peter’s Basilica on October 21, 2012, becoming the country’s second saint.
